Jamaica Service Trip

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Students will be embarking on a service-learning trip to Whitehouse, Westomoreland, Jamaica over Spring Break. There will be pre-departure education about the current economic challenges facing Jamaica, which have been exacerbated by neo-liberal economic policies.  Once in Jamaica, students will work for five days on service projects, which will consist of home and school construction, upkeep, and repair.  There will be reflection sessions held each evening.  Upon conclusion of the trip, a reflection paper will be due.  Students will be encouraged to explore the cognitive dissonance they may have encountered between the typical mental image of Jamaica for most Americans—sun and sand—and the profound poverty they will encounter on the trip.
