Name: Nick Roberts Institution: Moravian College Year: Sophomore Second time participant in Jamaica Service Trip. Being my second trip to Jamaica, I have been able to experience a lot of what the country has to offer. But this year especially, I have been able to connect myself closer to the Jamaican culture. Through this trip, I was able to find my center. I realized I am capable of completing tasks that are way past my comfort zone by seeing how well the Jamaican people adapt to their surroundings, and how they are able to keep such a level head throughout all of their hardships.
Name: Matt Richards Institution: Moravian College Year: Senior First time participant in Jamaica Service Trip. This trip has not only been one of charity, but a learning experience as well. Besides picking up some Patwa (Jamaican dialect) while I was here, I have enjoyed learning more about the great culture of Jamaica. It feels great to give back to the community, and I hope that I have made a difference in the lives of the school children. About the Adventure When: March 2-9, 2013 Where: Westmoreland, Jamaica What: 12 Moravian College students plus another 6 members of the college and seminary community will participate in a week of community service in some of the poorest areas in the western region of Jamaica. The work projects for the week include painting an orphanage, two elementary schools, and a youth camping facility. Schedule: Departure from the HUB at 1:00am on Saturday morning for a 6:00am flight on Caribbean Airlines from New York JFK International Airport. The first two days will provide opportunities to visit beaches, tour a typical tourist resort, and the option of worship on Sunday morning. Monday through Friday provides a routine for work projects in the mornings and early afternoons. Late afternoons include trips to the beach and other attractions, ending with evening reflection sessions. There will be campfires, climbing waterfalls, craft shopping at the market, and an abundance of Jamaican cuisine. Blog Archives |
